This unique approach has enabled me to traverse numerous fields, identifying common threads to weave into a more unified practice. Although my journey has been personally enriching, spurred by my innate interests, I am deeply aware that my practice wouldn't be where it is today without the invaluable contributions of my students. The process of communicating my ideas to them, both theoretically and practically, has led to a profound evolution of my understanding. I am profoundly grateful for this reciprocal relationship.
I view my journey as a heroic quest, driven by a collective desire for wisdom. I see myself as a seeker venturing into the unknown, buoyed by the support of those around me, and returning with insights to share with the community.
My hope is to connect with those of you who are also imbued with a curious mind and an intuitive heart, ready to explore unfamiliar territories. Together, we can carve out individual paths towards achieving unity and wholeness.
Hello and welcome! My name is Ronan Lewins.
I am a movement practitioner, driven by a relentless curiosity and a profound sense of wonder about the world around me. This curiosity has not only been a guiding beacon in my life but has also profoundly influenced my philosophy and practice. It has encouraged me to delve deeper into the fascinating realm of human movement, viewing it through a distinctive lens.
One of my key pursuits involves comprehending our current understanding of the human body in all its complex iterations, honoring the vast library of knowledge passed down to us by pioneers in the field. Yet, while appreciating these existing insights, I continuously strive to look at things with fresh eyes. This perspective has allowed me to explore overlooked potential areas, often obscured by conventional focus.
About Me
My Journey (So Far…)
I was active from a very young age and lucky enough to be thrown into most sports that were available to me in Ireland. I played mainly Gaelic Football, Hurling and Soccer from all through my youth which all gave me a very athletic base and awareness of my body. As I grew into my teens I dabbled in other sports that became available, throwing my hand into Basketball, Table Tennis and Martial Arts (Kung Fu & San Shou).
A turning point for me in my athletic “career” came about when I was selected for the Dublin Hurling Development Squad when I was 14/15. I played three games for them in a little mini tournament that would determine whether we were selected for the next stage. I played well, scoring in all of my matches and I expected to be picked. At the time I was scrawny and not so tall and all those that were selected were above 6 foot and were bulky. I took this as a message to get into the gym and pack on some muscle.
I was absorbed by the gym from this age and focused heavily on a bodybuilding style of training. My main goals were to pack on as much muscle as I could and eventually get as strong as I possible could. This was hugely beneficial for me at the time as it gave me much needed strength and size that can lay a great foundation for any athlete or practitioner. When I went back to playing sports I was certainly a more powerful and versatile athlete.
This period of time heavily influenced me as I matured. I learned valuable lessons about discipline and consistent effort and how they relate to my visions of the future. The physical change I saw coincided with an even greater psychological change in my character as I became more confident and happy in my own skin. This is something one could easily take for granted considering how early this transition happened to me.
As I gained more experience with physical training I decided to pursue a career in the field and studied a BSc in Sports Science and Health. Across the four years of study, a vast amount of related fields on the body, movement and science were explored which gave me a broad viewpoint at which I could observe things and problem solve from.
In line with completing my degree I started working as a Personal Trainer. Once my degree was completed I found myself enveloped in my career as a PT. After building up very quickly to a full schedule of clients I was presented with an opportunity to leave the comfortable setting of the big gym I was working in and to venture out into running my own private training facility. This was another major turning point in my life. I was able to see the comfort that lay ahead of me in my current role as a PT in a gym which contrasted massively with the opportunity that was loaded with possibility and uncertainty. In hindsight I’m glad I was able to take the leap despite the fear that one naturally experiences when diving into the unknown.
From the summer of 2018 I was operating a thriving private training facility called Square One Coaching. Operating a business gave me an incredible platform to find my own philosophy and systems of working with other people. I wanted the facility to be known as a place that was against the “Fast Fitness” culture that has slowly shaped our images of gyms and fitness as a whole. The services we offered were focused on building a healthy relationship with training, nutrition and lifestyle rather than aiming to rush the process and pursue things in a grossly unhealthy way.
In the years that followed I vastly improved in my coaching ability after being exposed to new ways of delivering my materials. I continued to up-skill in many areas that I have continued to foster as time has gone on.
I found myself in a very interesting place in the summer of 2021. I describe it as a realisation that something was missing in what I was doing. While I had built up Square One Coaching in a way I thought was true and honest to my vision, I was aware that the environment I found myself in had certain expectations attached to it. Operating a gym meant seeing things through more of a business lens and this is something I struggled with while running the facility. It meant that I had to cater to the wants and desires of my clients, which ultimately productises the Work into something that can be sold (I am not necessarily saying this is a bad thing).
What I had been pursuing in the years prior to operating a business was something much different. I was doing the Work in respect to the Work itself, for the love of the Work itself. I had lost sight of this while running a business and so found myself in a space where I was seeking inspiration from the world around me. That came to me in the form of a Movement School ran by a teacher of mine, Marcello Palozzo. The opportunity of a life-time was presented to me which led me to close the gym in September of 2021 and move to Vienna, Austria to study under Marcello.
What followed was the most significant, transformational period of my life (so far…). The Movement School and Marcello helped me see through my many systems of belief and narratives that were shaping my thoughts. The work he presented gradually helped me make sense of the underlying things that were the essence of me as an individual and how that was what I had been seeking throughout the years. I was unveiled and left out to dry many times throughout my time in the school which led to the necessary disarray that precedes the creation of a new path forward.
In taking what I’ve learned from the school I now find myself in a new frontier. My goals are to continue to piece together the fragmented version of myself through a process of individuation. In order to continue that work I’ve recognised a necessary growth into the next stage in my role as a teacher. As I have spent many years researching and collating materials I would like to share that material with others in an attempt to guide those on a similar journey. In doing so I will remind myself that those who decide to study with me are on a journey themselves and the only way I can help them is by venturing forward myself with the same level of curiosity and wonder as them. A positive feedback loop that continues to spiral upwards.
By studying with me you ultimately help me live out my dream and bring the necessary outside perspective and partner to contend with. If a spark has been created from some of the information I’ve made available on my website then I would love for you to reach out and consider studying with me.
